Fright Night – First trailer and poster revealed

Fright Night

I have been scathing and then cautiously optimistic about the Fright Night reboot, so I approached the newly released trailer and poster (first previewed over at IGN with some interest. There’s a decidedly 80s feel about the poster, with a logo almost identical to the original film. Also, wasn’t it going to be called Fright?

Anyhoo, onto the trailer, which sets up the premise neatly, seems to have one very special sequence involving the gas main, has a sequence in the nightclub. My goodness that may have made the exact same movie. Except for one thing. Where the hell is Peter Vincent?

Vincent, played by David Tennant makes a very brief appearance at 2:10. So I’m wondering whether this is a deliberate tease, whether Vincent is much less of a key figure, or whether Tennant’s American accent (last seen in the failed pilot “Rex is Not Your Lawyer”) has proved problematic.

Yelchin looks great as Charley Brewster, if a little old now to be a high-schooler. Obviously he has a bad case of Matthew Broderick syndrome…

Still, the film looks suitably dark, rather than the broad comedy that the original had. With a release date brought forwards to August in the US and September in the UK I wonder how it will fare against the other summer blockbusters.

Fright Night stars Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Imogen Poots and David Vincent. Screenplay is by Marti Noxon and it’s directed by Craig Gillespie.
