First trailer released for Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

The first trailer has been released for author Julie Leigh’s directorial debut, Sleeping Beauty, which has been selected for competition at Cannes next month. Starring Emily Browning the film’s synopsis according to the website is as follows:

You will go to sleep. You will wake up. It will be as though those hours never existed.
Death-haunted, quietly reckless Lucy (Emily Browning) is a young university student who takes a job as a Sleeping Beauty. In the Sleeping Beauty Chamber old men seek an erotic experience that requires Lucy’s absolute submission. This unsettling task starts to bleed into Lucy’s daily life and she develops and increasing need to know what happens to her when she is asleep.

Coming so soon on the heels of Sucker Punch, it’s clear that Browning is happy to choose roles that perhaps other young actresses would baulk at. And her anger at some of the edits the MPAA asked for on Sucker Punch suggests she’s nobody’s fool and thinks this stuff through carefully.

With director Jane Campion calling Leigh a “new, fully confident cinema voice … with an extraordinary talent”, and a trailer that definitely intruigues, this is definitely a movie to look out for when it comes out on general release later this year.
