Red Riding Hood – first trailer

Red Riding Hood

Red Riding Hood is one of the classic fairytales. Angela Carter turned it on its head in The Bloody Chamber, which led to Neil Jordan’s excellent film The Company of Wolves.

Next year, Warners will add to the retelling of this story with Red Riding Hood. In itself this doesn’t seem like a bad idea, in the right hands could be like Tim Burton’s re-imagining of Sleepy Hollow.

The poster looks suitably gothy, strong visuals…but what’s that I see? “From the director of Twilight”…

*heart sinks*

What about the precis?

Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie’s older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomon’s arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon…

Oh… that sounds….

Hmm, well there’s a new trailer, that should give us a good idea of what it will be like….

Ok then. So this looks to be a poor tween’s idea of The Company of Wolves, with Gary Oldman chewing the scenery as only he can. This looks hackneyed in the extreme and at this point I’m hoping that it’s unintentionally hilarious as it doesn’t appear to have a lot else going for it.

Dear Hollywood please learn this lesson. Pretty boy werewolves =/= great movie.

Red Riding Hood opens April 15th in the UK

  1. I’d prefer it if Hollywood made a film with pretty blood-thirsty werewolves. Must watch some.
