New Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie *without* Joss

Buffy staked Edward

#472 in “stupid decisions Hollywood has made this year” is the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, which does not have Joss Whedon attached to it in any way, shape or form.

First reported in the the LA Times, the news spread through the internet like wildfire. The script, written by actress Whit Anderson will be a completely new reboot. Which means no Giles, Willow, Xander, Angel, Spike etc.

It’s clearly a move to capture the post-Twilight market, but fans are in an uproar which is hardly surprising.

Via E! Joss Whedon has now commented on the news .

This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

Of course, the REALLY stupid thing about this (other than, you know, just getting Joss to write the damn thing) is that “…into every generation a Slayer is born..”. So here’s a radical idea, why not have a new Slayer movie but don’t call her Buffy or set it in Sunnydale. Make her British and living in Hong Kong, or Aborigine, or Icelandic. The potential to add a new chapter to the mythos is wonderful. But of course, that would require wit and invention. Paging Joss Whedon….. oh…

Still, I guess this godawful news does give me a chance to post the Buffy v Twilight mashup again.

  1. It might work, you never know. The original film vs tv series shows there are many ways to spin that particular concept.

Then again, much as everyone lauds Buffy, I just couldn’t accept the fact it was basically a bunch of teens fighting vampires. Hated that whole concept. Bloody teenagers. Get rid of them all. Bah.

  2. Awful, just awful. The only good thing to come out of this is that it makes me want to rewatch Buffy.

I can’t stand this constant rebooting. Really don’t understand why they’re rebooting Spidey for example. And this fillum just sounds as though it will be a big, steaming pile of do do.

  3. As a die hard fan, I will never watch this trash! I love you Joss!!
