The Thing – First Images

The Thing

I will admit I was fairly disparaging when I first heard about the remake of John Carpenter’s The Thing. I didn’t believe that a remake could add anything particularly new to the canon. (Despite the fact that Carpenter’s work is of course a remake itself.)

However as news filtered through about director Matthijs van Heijningen’s vision for the movie, I started to consider that it might have some weight behind it.

Now, courtesy of Collider who had on-set access, we have the first images from the movie and an in-depth interview with the Dutch filmmaker.

The interview contains a number of spoilers, so I recommend you proceed with caution, but one of the things made clear is that this is a character based movie which eventually becomes a horror film. He also confirmed that the Norwegian cast will indeed be speaking Norwegian, this will be a multi-lingual movie.

The synopsis is as follows:

At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson (Ulrich Thomsen). While Dr. Halvorson keeps to his research, Kate partners with Sam Carter (Joel Edgerton), a helicopter pilot, to pursue the alien life form.

So clearly a prequel rather than a reboot?

The Thing is due to open in the US on April 29th 2011
