Karl Urban IS the Law

Hot news from Empire and Movie-Con tonight, as they confirm that Karl Urban (Star Trek) has been cast as Dredd in the forthcoming film.

The rumour has been floating around since SDCC a few weeks ago, but at a panel this evening, producer Andrew McDonald (28 Days Later, Sunshine) confirmed Urban has been given the role.

The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago,” said Macdonald. “Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real….It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision.

The 1995 movie, directed by Danny Cannon received a great deal of criticism, not only for Stallone taking his helmet off by also for great visuals/characters that were casually or badly used. The new movie has been in the planning stages for some time and concept artwork was release in January 2009.

According to McDonald shooting will start in South Africa shortly, with Pete Travis directing. While I’m not entirely sure that Urban has the chin for this (it should have been Clint, 20 years ago), Wagner’s involvement and McDonald’s assurances, make me cautiously optimistic at the very least.
