Hulk in The Avengers movie, the rumour mill grinds on

Ever since HITFIX announced that Ed Norton was not to reprise his role as Bruce Banner in the forthcoming Avengers movie, the internet has been ablaze.

Hitfix reported that Marvel had decided to go with an unknown, much to the general upset of fans. Marvel then released an incredibly mealy mouthed statement suggesting that Norton wasn’t a team player and that they were looking for an actor, who, in the words of Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president of Production embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members.

Norton released a dignified statement expressing sadness that he wouldn’t be playing Banner. At around the same time, a new rumour surfaced, courtesy of CHUD that Joaquin Phoenix had been offered the role.

Fandom looked slightly boggled and bemused, and for 24 hours things calmed down a little. Then the LA Times at 4:52 local time today reported that the list of possible Banners also included Nathan Fillian, Adrian Brody and our very own David Tennant.

The general feeling, ever since the announcement that Norton would not be cast, has been that Marvel would reveal the new Bruce Banner at San Diego Comic Con, so if Deadline’s piece about Mark Ruffalo in last minute talks for the role is true, then somebody’s head may roll.

I suspect until we see the cast on the SDCC stage, that this one will run and run. Yet ultimately, you have to ask, just how much onscreen time will Banner have anyway, and is this all, ultimately a storm in a tea cup?

  1. Ang Lee’s Hulk was a big stinking mess and I tried to forget about it, but I couldn’t do it completely until Edward Norton came along and was an excellent Puny Banner.
It’s not like Norton is as replacable as that guy with the lack of charisma and annoying voice from Iron Man but not Iron Man 2. Meh.. whoever.
I know I am a foolish idealist, but wouldn;t it be nice if Stan Lee stepped in and said “Hey guys, what do the fans think?” and upon hearing the collective cry of “get Ed back!” would stick his magical pen through the brain stem of Kevin Feige. “You got it, true believers!”

  2. Playing should be player and you need a space between reportedthat

    • Fixed! Thanks m’dear, hard to concentrate when I’ve Junior Miss Moviegrrl, talking Mr Moviegrrl through levels of Lego Harry Potter… my kingdom for a study!!!

  3. It’s a shame to lose Norton although I’d say if he’s half as fussy and interfering as rumoured then he wouldn’t work all that well in an ensemble. I do like the idea of Ruffolo though, he’d be an excellent brooding Banner.

  4. David Tennant! LOL

The biggest positive to take out of all this is that it confirms for definite that the Hulk will be in the film. I was very worried that he might not be.

  5. Hey there,
Just started an Irish film blog, love yours, nice to see another girl doing this kind of thing:)
