Doctor Who Christmas Special – details announced

Matt Smith

It was a busy day for the BBC Press Office and Doctor Who yesterday, as they announced guest star casting and the nature of the plot.

The casting of Michael Gambon cannot fail to excite, and while Katherine Jenkins is a light classical singer at best, her appearance may be no more incidental to the plot than Courtney Pine in Silver Nemesis. This could be construed as “stunt casting”, which is a malaise the Christmas specials have suffered from (Kylie being the most obvious case in point). Having said that, without the Christmas special we would never have had Donna Noble, which would have been a crying shame, and David Morrissey and Dervla Kerwin in The Next Doctor were both fantastic.

And what of the plot? Well the Doctor Who Christmas special is an odd breed of animal really, that achieves a varying degree of sucess. Steven Moffat has said of his first shot at one:

“Oh, we’re going for broke with this one. It’s all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. And … oh, you’ll see. I’ve honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I’m fairly sure they did it ironically!”

According to Ben Stephenson the story will be a twist on A Christmas Carol, which sounds like fun and Moffat can write Who Fluff probably better than anyone q.v. The Curse of the Fatal Death. The first readthrough was last week and the episode will be shot next month. Looks like I may have to avoid certain corners of the internet again until Christmas!
