PoTC4:On Stranger Tides – Synopsis revealed

I make no apologies for this. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been one of diminishing returns.
Whilst swayed by Johnny Depp’s performance in the first movie (as Jason Isaacs once described it, like a reveler coming out of the Heaven nightclub in 1974), I do remember sitting there agape and saying “Holy Crap! It’s ripping off On Stranger Tides!

On Stranger Tides is a fantasy novel, written by Tim Powers and first published in 1988. Powers does a very neat line in well researched historical fantasy, and his tale of zombie pirates is one of my favourite books. So I’ve always been a little down on PoTC since then, quite frankly. The excesses of the two sequels and their need for stupid plotlines that do nothing to add to the story but do add to merchandising make me foam at the mouth.

So when I heard that Disney had actually optioned On Stranger Tides for the fourth installment, my main thoughts were
– Too little, too late
– Oh bugger, they’re going to eff it up, aren’t they?

The press release from Disney yesterday, hardly filled me with glee.

In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love–or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

On Stranger Tides

Ugh. So it looks like they’ve taken the Fountain of Youth and Blackbeard from the original book and very little else. I don’t blame Powers for selling the rights to his book, hey, the guy’s gotta eat, and I personally feel Disney owe him big time. (Please don’t sue, just an opinion…). And with Ian McShane chewing the scenery as Blackbeard and Penelope Cruz being gorgeous, this may have performances to redeem it.

Personally? I think you’d be better off just buying the book from Amazon.com.

  1. I have never understood the appeal of the Pirates films. The first one is a distinctly average swashbuckler, and the one note performance of Depp stops being funny after the scene on the island with Knightly. I cannot see anything in it that gives it the level of standing it seems to enjoy from its audience.

  2. […] the Carribean movie was to be based on Tim Power’s fantasy novel On Stranger Tides, I admit I frothed at the mouth a […]
